Three Awesome Examples of Grand Format Printing

Most people see out of home advertising every day. Billboards, vehicle wraps on trucks and buses, mall signs, retail displays…the list goes on.

What many people don't realize is that these ads were made possible by an important technology: grand format printing.

What is grand format printing?

Put simply, grand format printing (also called super wide format) is printing on the largest possible scale. The exact specifications vary from company to company, but any printing job over 72 inches wide is usually considered grand format.

A few examples of grand format printing:

• Vehicle wraps • Outdoor banners • Trade show signage • Murals

When you need to make a big impression in more ways than one, grand format printing is the best choice.

Why use grand format printing?

Although many believe digital advertising to be most effective, research shows that people are still persuaded by what they see outside their homes. Research shows that nearly 60% of people have learned about an event they wanted to attend or a restaurant they wanted to dine at by seeing it on a billboard.

Wondering how real brands are using grand format printing? We've identified three of our favorite examples below:

H&M Takes Las Vegas

In 2010, Swedish clothing company H&M decided to arrive in style to Sin City. The company opened their largest U.S. store in the Forum Shops mall at Caesars Palace, in a space previously occupied by FAO Schwarz. They needed an equally large sign to promote the store's opening.

Dexter Goes Mobile

The Showtime drama about a forensic technician moonlighting as a serial killer was extremely popular – nearly three million people tuned in to see the premiere of its final episode in 2013. Part of the show's advertising campaign involved putting title character Dexter Morgan and his son on MTA buses around New York – with a healthy dose of blood, one of Dexter's obsessions and the show's hallmark.

Life Advice from GNC

In 2011, the Pittsburgh-based health and vitamin retailer launched its "Live Well" campaign, a reminder for people to take care of themselves by living a healthier lifestyle. This outdoor banner features a minimalist black and white portrait of a model, GNC's logo and tagline, and large block letters.
